Position Summary

Visit Anchorage drives economic and social value for Anchorage residents, businesses, and visitors through tourism. Visitation generates social, cultural, and financial benefits and helps diversify and develop our economy. Since 1975, Visit Anchorage has marketed and promoted our community before the traveling public.  In addition to those efforts, Visit Anchorage also serves as a vehicle for coordinated programs, advocacy, and industry education for the community and local tourism business. As a 501(c)6, not-for-profit membership organization, Visit Anchorage is a convener for travel and tourism companies in Southcentral Alaska and the state at large.

Essential Job Functions

Under the supervision of the Vice President, Destination Services, this position leads the membership team as they seek new members, generate revenue, and ensure members receive value through Visit Anchorage programs.

The Senior Member Services Manager will work to recruit and retain members, sell visitor-facing advertising in all forms to members. Support local advocacy and community relations efforts by energizing and coordinating private industry on shared initiatives important to the industry and the wider community. Work closely with the Events and Community Outreach Manager to develop concepts, coordinate logistics, and host industry events that engage and support the local tourism community.

  • Leading the membership sales team, setting goals and determining the scope and division of work for Visit Anchorage’s member-oriented initiatives.
  • Setting goals for the membership sales managers for membership revenue and renewals, advertising opportunities in Visit Anchorage publications, co-op programs, and other opportunities. Provides regular reporting on pace, revenue, and top-level membership activities through quarterly reporting and other tracking.
  • Assisting with development of the department’s annual plan and budget in coordination with VP Destination Services and Visitor Services Director and managing income and expenses related to membership sales and services.
  • Orchestrating print and digital ad sales in Visit Anchorage products and publications including Anchorage.net, The Official Guide to Anchorage, Restaurant & Entertainment Guide, and others. Explaining benefits and procedures of advertising to members and assisting members in selecting appropriate advertising opportunities. Preparing and executing contracts including the timely collection of payment and meeting project deadlines.
  • Identifying potential new benefits and membership best practices through independent research or participation in industry conferences and education.
  • Researching and coordinating engagement with potential members and non-member businesses to ensure they understand the value and opportunities available through Visit Anchorage.
  • Shaping sponsorship opportunities for Visit Anchorage events and promotions including the Annual Seymour Awards Banquet, Open House, and other member events.
  • Developing procedures and training for Member Services Managers in Simpleview CRM. Overseeing the accuracy and maintenance of member data including the membership, coop, and RSVP modules.
  • Participating in the screening and hiring of Member Service Managers when positions become available.

Essential Knowledge, Skills, and Experience

  • Exceptional customer service skills and face to face communication skills to speak one-on-one and to groups of business leaders, residents, volunteers, visitors, and other groups.
  • Outstanding written communication skills to compose, edit, and proof email correspondence, printed collateral, and other information for distribution to residents, local stakeholders, businesses, and internal audiences.
  • Eye for detail to aid businesses in maximizing the value of membership by ensuring that information in business profiles is accurate; encouraging companies to participate in member events; providing information on marketing tools, educational opportunities and networking opportunities available through their membership.
  • Experience supervising, coaching, and supporting staff to achieve team goals.
  • Sales experience with a track record of success, including proactive outreach and building new client relationships.
  • Comfort with securing cash and in-kind sponsorships and promoting attendance/involvement with Visit Anchorage events and programs.
  • Ability to establish and develop relationships with businesses leaders.
  • Effective time management and organizational skills.
  • Commitment to Visit Anchorage’s mission and vision.
  • Understanding of Microsoft Office suite and general digital proficiency.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment to balance and prioritize multiple, competing tasks and demands and to seek supervisory assistance when needed.
  • Flexibility to work a schedule that may include occasional evenings or weekends for industry events and community functions.
     

Preferred

  • Membership sales, advertising sales, or development/donations background.
  • Existing knowledge of Alaska’s travel industry, businesses, and product offerings.
  • Familiarity with a CRM or database software (Simpleview, Salesforce, etc.)
     

Pay & Benefits

  • The starting salary for this position is $75,000 commensurate with experience.
  • Visit Anchorage is committed to a healthy work/life balance.
  • Full-time employees receive 80 hours of paid vacation annually, with the prospect of more after 5 years of employment. Visit Anchorage also offers up to 144 hours of paid personal leave for personal appointments, illness, and emergencies. Visit Anchorage observes 11 holidays, one floating holiday, an added day off in the employee’s birth month, and a volunteer day every quarter.
  • Visit Anchorage provides a 401(k) plan for eligible employees after one year of service and contributes an amount equal to 5% of individual wages.
  • Visit Anchorage allows up to 12 weeks for family or medical leave for the birth of an employee's child, placement of a child with the employee for adoption or foster care, or in the event an employee is unable to perform the functions of his/her job due to health condition or is needed to care for a child, spouse, or parent who has a serious health condition.
  • Visit Anchorage pays the premium for group life, and a percentage of health and dental insurance for employees.
