Back To Nature

Reconnect with nature and enjoy family time. With naturalist programs, a treasure hunt and storytelling, every member of the family will find big fun in Alaska’s vast outdoor spaces.

Morning

Watch beavers build a dam, go on a spring morel mushroom hunt, learn about nature’s medicine kit or explore the colors of snow at one of the many weekend programs geared for tots and adults year-round at the Eagle River Nature Center, just 40 minutes from downtown Anchorage. During winter, the center hosts a popular astronomy series, in addition to moonlight hikes, skiing and winter survival workshops.

Afternoon

Go high-tech to unlock secrets hidden in the city and in wild spaces surrounding Anchorage. Geocaching uses a Global Positioning System (GPS) device to find “caches.” These small stashes hold anything from little toys to special coins. This is a great activity for adventurers of all ages. Pick-up a geocache brochure, designed by local middle school students, at the Log Cabin Visitor Information Center.

Evening

Explore the 110-acre Alaska Botanical Garden with a Discovery Duffel chock full of kids’ activity ideas and books from the nursery. Look for special family events and programs for kids scheduled throughout the year.
