What Can I Do in the Evening in Anchorage?

Whether the midnight sun keeps you going, or you just have a late night flight to catch, Anchorage is filled with activity in the evening. See what events are running that night, or try out one of these great evening ideas in Anchorage.

Evening Tours and Attractions in Anchorage

Alaska Photo Treks offers a four-hour Sunset Photo Safari that takes advantage of the golden light close to sundown. Stops vary as the guide, a photography pro, pursues the best conditions for the day. Depending on the date, the tour begins between 6 and 8:30 p.m.

With hourly and half-hourly departures from downtown Anchorage, Anchorage Trolley Tours has a great way to see a bit of Anchorage beyond downtown. From May 17 to August 31, the trolley’s final run departs at 8:15 p.m. Check out Lake Hood Seaplane Base, Earthquake Park, and other sights from the comfort of the trolley.

The Alaska Zoo stays open until 9 p.m. (final admission is at 8:30 p.m.) in June, July and August. The zoo also offers a free shuttle from downtown Anchorage, with the final run departing from the Visitor Information Center F Street and Fourth Avenue at 6:40 p.m. during those summer months.

Stories of supernatural sightings fill Ghost Tours of Anchorage. The downtown walking tour is filled with plenty of historical detail on top of the ghostly tales.

Alaska Escape Rooms books groups as late as 10 p.m. The challenging puzzles pit participants against the clock as they solve clues in an attempt to escape.

The Alaska Botanical Garden is open dawn to dusk - definitely evening hours when the midnight sun is concerned - for lovers of perennials, herbs, wildflowers and trees. You'll need to pay by cash or check after the gift shop hours.

Nature Never Closes

Self-guided bike tours are easy and inexpensive. Pick up a bike for an hour or two and pedal the Coastal Trail for exceptional coastal views, plus the occasional cameo from eagles, cranes or moose.

With Ship Creek just a few blocks from downtown Anchorage’s main streets, fishing for king or silver salmon is easy, even for newbies. The Bait Shack has rental gear and licenses on site, and since the best fishing is dependent on the tides, the best time to fish could be well after typical business hours. If angling isn’t your angle, several nearby platforms and pedestrian bridges give spectators a great view of the action.

Take advantage of all that extra sunlight to get out and see the sights. FlattopPotter Marsh, Point Woronzof are among the great spots to look for wildlife and watch the sun lazily tilt toward the horizon. None of them close. Kincaid Park is a favorite spot to look for moose - they tend to be more active in the morning and evening hours. The vast park’s front gate doesn’t shut until 10 p.m.

Evening Shows in Anchorage

The summer sun may not set until late, but there’s one way to get a taste of the northern lights in the middle of midnight sun “AurorA - Alaska’s Great Northern Lights” features mesmerizing aurora imagery from local photographer Dave Parkhurst. The 60 minute show runs daily, on the hour all summer long, with the last screening at 9 p.m.
