Girdwood was once known as Glacier City, and a glance into the surrounding mountains shows why. Hanging glaciers ring the small mountain town and are evident on the aerial tram ride up Mount Alyeska. Near the summit, Seven Glaciers isn’t just a clever name; you can spot seven named glaciers from the restaurant’s panoramic windows.
Girdwood’s glaciers are more than just scenery. Hiking and ice climbing trips explore Alyeska Glacier. The local airport and helipads are the launch point for flights out on to glaciers higher up and further out. Alpine Air flies into the Chugach Mountains and sets down on Punch Bowl Glacier. There’s even a summer dogsledding camp. It’s a great way to check out mushing in the summer sun.
