One of the most distinctive aspects of golfing in Anchorage is our short yet vibrant summer season. The extended daylight hours during the summer solstice allow golfers to enjoy tee times as late as 10 PM. This means that you can literally play golf all night long, guided by the soft glow of the midnight sun. This unique phenomenon makes golfing in Anchorage an adventure in itself, as you enjoy the game under a sky that never fully darkens. 

Course Recommendations 

Russian Jack Springs Golf Course - $ 

Russian Jack Springs Golf Course holds a special place in my heart as it was where I first fell in love with the game of golf. This nine-hole course features some "interesting" layout choices, reflecting the challenges of maintaining a golf course in Anchorage's unique climate. The course uses artificial greens, which can be a bit unforgiving to high-lofted approach shots. So, be prepared for some unexpected bounces! 

Despite its quirks, Russian Jack Springs is a charming course surrounded by wooded fairways that block out the noise from the busy streets. On clear days, you can catch glimpses of the Chugach and Alaska ranges over the trees, adding a scenic backdrop to your game. The walking and biking trail that wraps around the course is perfect for a leisurely stroll or bike ride, making it a popular spot for locals. The course operates on a first-come, first-served basis and offers rental clubs and pull carts. 

Fox Hollow Sports Dome - $$ 

Fox Hollow is Anchorage's only year-round golfing facility. This nine-hole course has made significant improvements over the past few years, transforming into a venue that feels like a genuine golf course on a par 3 scale. Nestled between the Seward Highway and a residential neighborhood, the course is surprisingly quiet, with the occasional sighting of foxes, moose, and even bears adding to the excitement. 

During the winter, Fox Hollow's indoor driving range dome is a hub of activity. The dome, which is about 100 yards long, offers golfers the chance to continue hitting real golf balls despite the snow outside. Additionally, the facility has invested in six About Golf simulators, which are in high demand throughout the winter. These simulators allow golfers to play virtual rounds at famous courses like Pebble Beach, Whistling Straits, and TPC Sawgrass, providing a much-needed escape from skiing, skating, and other winter sports. 

Fox Hollow also features a charming chalet near the second hole, providing an ideal venue for weddings and events. This picturesque location showcases the golf course against a stunning mountainous backdrop, creating an unforgettable setting for any occasion. 

Moose Run Golf Course (Creek and Hill Courses) - $$$$ 

Moose Run Golf Course, located just 20 minutes from Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport, boasts the northernmost 36-hole golf facility in America. The two courses, the Hill and the Creek, offer distinct experiences for golfers of all skill levels. 

The Hill Course is ideal for both beginners and advanced players, with the front nine presenting the most challenges. The back nine is relatively flat and straightforward, making it a great option for newcomers to the game. It's a perfect place to introduce someone to the joys of a full-size course. 

The Creek Course, on the other hand, is a formidable challenge. Known for its excellent layout and, at times, pristine conditions, this course can be unforgiving if your swing is off. Prepare to go through several sleeves of golf balls as you navigate its demanding holes. Despite the difficulty, the Creek Course offers a rewarding experience for those who enjoy the challenge of golf. 

Anchorage Golf Course - $$$$ 

Anchorage Golf Course has been my home course since I started working when I was 17 years old. Over the years, I have spent countless hours on this course, and it remains my favorite for many reasons. The course offers a mix of challenges and breathtaking views that keep golfers returning year after year. 

This course is typically the most maintained course, with lush fairways and greens that reflect the dedication of Mike Stern and his groundskeeping team. The course layout is designed to test various aspects of your game, with blind shots and undulating greens.  

They recently hosted the 60th USGA Senior Women's Amateur Championship in 2022. This required some maintenance and revamping of the course, and the public has reaped the benefits of this. 

Additionally, the course's location provides stunning views of Denali on a clear day. The scenery can be viewed from the Omalley’s on the Green restaurant, which is also a large venue for weddings, corporate gatherings, and events.
