Anchorage is a hub for imaginative artists and diverse art forms from communities across Alaska. Drew Michael became a mask carver to connect more deeply with his Yup’ik and Iñupiat heritage. In doing so, he revealed a deeper connection to his identity and Alaska Native culture, inspiring him to carry forward an ancient art form that was nearly lost decades ago. Today, Drew merges an ancestral tradition with a distinctly modern style leading to vivid artistry that is making Anchorage more colorful in more ways than one.
