In preparation for the 50th anniversary of the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race, Travel Weekly contributor Renee Brincks highlights the culture and tradition of the iconic Alaska race. The 2022 event kicks off with a ceremonial start in Downtown Anchorage on March 5, and Brincks shares the deep roots of the popular race  plus some of the best ways for visitors to get in on the action.

"Fans can attend meet-the-musher events and banquets in the days leading up to the 2022 Iditarod," Brincks writes. "Travelers can also catch the Iditarod's ceremonial start on Saturday, March 5, in downtown Anchorage. Spectators will line the streets to watch teams take off for an 11-mile run to the Campbell Airstrip."
