Anchorage has been chosen as the location for the Alaska Summit with US President Donald Trump and his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, on Friday, Aug. 15. In preparation for this historic meeting on Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, here are a few tips for visitors, residents, and local businesses:

Be Patient and Prepared

Be patient as we all accommodate potential changes to our planned routines and schedules. If you manage a business, help alleviate pressure on your frontline team and consider bringing on extra staff this week to accommodate this influx of visitors to our community. Particularly for food and beverage businesses, if you are able, consider restocking your most popular items.

Review Changes to Highway and Road Traffic

Traffic patterns may change around certain buildings and on local highways due to VIP travel. While specific details are still being confirmed, past presidential visits have shown closures can cause delays for several hours. The Alaska Department of Transportation & Public Facilities will share any traffic impacts via 511.Alaska.gov. Plan accordingly and share similar information with your guests.

Air Service

As with highway and road closures, we anticipate that air space will be restricted multiple times on Friday and possibly over the next several days which could impact your guests’ arrivals and departures. Keep an eye open for official announcements and keep both your staff and guests informed.

Communicate

Anchorage accommodations and transportation are in high demand. Please share if you have last minute cancellations or opportunity to assist.

Shine

Anchorage is no stranger to global events and hosting is what we do best. Remember that while this is a political event, it’s also an incredible opportunity to show the world the beauty and hospitality of our community.
