In Anchorage, basketball rules Thanksgiving week with the Great Alaska Shootout. Top collegiate teams show their prowess on the court over the holiday long weekend. The tournament runs Thanksgiving weekend, and 2017 is the tournament's 40th anniversary.
A tradition in Anchorage, the annual tournament is hosted by the University of Alaska Anchorage at the Alaska Airlines Center.
For 2017, the hometown UAA Seawolves face off against Cal Poly, CSU Bakersfield, Central Michigan, College of Charleston, Idaho, Sam Houston State and Santa Clara in the men's bracket. The field for the women's tournament brings Binghamton, Maryland Eastern Shore and Tulsa to play the UAA Seawolves. The opening rounds are scheduled for November 21 for the women's field and November 22 for the men:

5:30 p.m. – Binghamton vs Tulsa
8 p.m. – Maryland Eastern Shore vs Alaska Anchorage
Wednesday, Nov. 22 – Men's First Round
Noon – Cal Poly vs College of Charleston

Thanksgiving in Anchorage
In between games, there is plenty to see and do during Thanksgiving in Anchorage. Thanksgiving week is filled with events. The annual tree lighting ceremony takes place Friday evening in Town Square Park. "The Nutcracker" and the state's best shopping are all part of the appeal.
