This position works under the direct supervision of the VP, Destination Services to manage Visit Anchorage's Visitor Information Centers (VICs) and oversee its comprehensive volunteer and paid staff program to provide service to visitors. 

What You’ll Do

This position manages the visitor information services to Anchorage visitors, residents, and Visit Anchorage members and maintains operations of` Visitor Information Centers (VICs) including the Log Cabin, Downtown Visitor Center, Airport Domestic, Airport International, and future centers or kiosks. In this full-time, salary position, you’ll be responsible for:  

  • Supervise Visitor Services staff and volunteers, including VIC supervisor positions and those with responsibility for brochure stocking and distribution. 
  • Assure a weekly schedule for VIC volunteers and staff for all four VIC locations based on need is maintained.  
  • Hire and train volunteers and staff, develop and maintain volunteer retention efforts.  
  • Develop relationships and maintain effective communication and cooperation between Visit Anchorage, the Municipality of Anchorage, Anchorage International Airport management and other entities regarding management, maintenance, and access to the VICs. 
  • Develop programs to increase resident and visitor traffic into VICs and increase patronage of member and other Anchorage businesses and natural attractions. 
  • Responsible for the development and execution of programs to increase revenue generated through Visitor Services functions and venues, including, but not limited to Corner Cache retail merchandise and member advertising opportunities. 
  • Assist in coordinating Critter events including organizing, staffing and costume repair/cleaning. 
  • Maintain accurate airport badging documentation for airport volunteers and staff. Completes annual badge audit, provided to airport security manager. 
  • Present service seminars and related events for Visit Anchorage members and other community groups. 
  • Serve on committees whose object is to provide service to visitors and other audiences as appropriate. 
  • Enhance Visit Anchorage’s community outreach and local engagement through support of special events of interest to visitors and residents alike. 
  • Coordinate and/or assist with Visit Anchorage events and programs, including monthly luncheons, orientations, business exchanges, annual banquet, Open House, and other events and programs. 
  • Plans, budgets, and reports on and initiatives aligned with Annual Plan, managing finances for relevant programs and projects.  
  • Model the Visit Anchorage Core Values in the performance of all job functions. 
  • Perform other related duties as assigned. 

Essential Knowledge, Skills, and Experience 

  • Completion of high school degree or similar vocational experience and a minimum of five (5) years’ experience in management, customer service and supervising volunteers; degree in Business Administration or similar education preferred. 
  • Ability to operate multiple job sites and manage spontaneous/simultaneous work requirements. 
  • Ability to sit or stand for long periods of time. 
  • Ability to obtain an Airport Badge with U.S. Customs clearance 
  • Ability to work independently and exercise discretion, initiative, judgment, and common sense to complete job responsibilities professionally and within Destinations International (DI) guidelines 
  • In-depth knowledge of Visit Anchorage members, local and regional businesses, and other attractions 
  • Detailed knowledge of Anchorage as a destination 
  • Demonstrated effective time management skills, organizational skills, self-motivation, flexibility, and ability to manage multiple projects 
  • Excellent oral communication skills and ability to speak one-on-one or to groups, in person as well as by phone and videoconferencing; work requires people interaction skills, heavy public contact, and ability to work with numerous personalities, crowds and pressure 
  • Excellent written communication skills to compose edit and proof advertisements, copy, business correspondence, and reports 
  • Advanced computer skills with a major emphasis on file maintenance including working knowledge of MS Windows, MS Office; an understanding of database and spreadsheet software 
  • Working knowledge of, and ability to perform basic troubleshooting, for standard office equipment including, phones, copier, and scanners 
  • Analytical ability necessary to handle moderately complex administrative details, such as preparing special reports by combining data from several sources and scheduling and planning work around others 
  • Position requires commitment to, knowledge of, and passion for Visit Anchorage programs and Anchorage product 
  • Work requires a valid Alaska driver’s license 

Pay & Benefits 

The salary range for this position is dependent on experience. 

Visit Anchorage is committed to a healthy work/life balance. 

Full-time employees receive 80 hours of paid vacation annually, with the prospect of more after 5 years of employment. Visit Anchorage also offers up to 144 hours of paid personal leave for personal appointments, illness, and injury. Visit Anchorage observes 11 holidays, one floating holiday, and an added day off in the employee’s birth month. 

Visit Anchorage provides a 401(k) plan for eligible employees after one year of service and contributes an amount equal to 5% of individual wages. 

Visit Anchorage allows up to 12 weeks for family or medical leave for the birth of an employee's child, placement of a child with the employee for adoption or foster care, or in the event an employee is unable to perform the functions of his/her job due to health condition or is needed to care for a child, spouse, or parent who has a serious health condition. 

Visit Anchorage pays the premium for group life, and a percentage of health and dental insurance for employees. 

Physical Demands and Work Environment 

While performing duties, the employee is regularly required to stand or sit for extended periods of time, use hands to handle, reach with hands and arms, talk, and hear. The employee is occasionally required to walk, stoop, kneel, or crouch. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, and ability to adjust focus. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
