Position Summary 

Visit Anchorage drives economic and social value for Anchorage residents, businesses, and visitors through tourism. Visitation generates social, cultural, and financial benefits and helps diversify and develop our economy. Since 1975, Visit Anchorage has marketed and promoted our community before the traveling public. 

This position works under the supervision of the Vice President of Communications to elevate the image of Anchorage and expand awareness of the destination and Visit Anchorage services through compelling communications. 

Essential Job Functions 

  • Develops creative content for Visit Anchorage printed materials and digital assets. 
  • Maintains the brand’s voice and guides visitor engagement through external communications with leisure, trade, and meeting audiences, as well as residents. 

  • Refines and improves the delivery of destination information and traveler services to visitors. 

  • Develops, writes, edits, and updates Visit Anchorage web content, publications, news releases, brochures, advertisements, newsletters, fact sheets, e-communications, presentations, video, and digital content. 

  • Manages social media platforms including Facebook, Instagram, X, Pinterest, and LinkedIn. 

  • Develops messages and strategies for leisure travel outreach designed to engage the most likely Anchorage visitors. 

  • Identifies and amplifies culturally diverse local voices best exemplifying the Anchorage and experience. 

  • Manages audience engagement across multiple platforms. 

  • Pursues and tracks new travel product, business news, and leisure trends in the municipality, serving as a clearinghouse for staff. 

  • Coordinates with editorial staff and content contributors on assignments, topics, and coverage. 

  • Assists Communications Operations Manager with media hosting duties as schedule demands, pitching stories aligned with community goals to travel media. 

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Experience 

Core 

  • Knowledge and ability to present Anchorage and the community’s assets clearly, confidently, and with enthusiasm to travelers and residents enjoying leisure time, tailoring messages to specific audiences and channels. 

  • Proven experience and ability in journalism or public relations writing and editing, including working knowledge of AP style. 

  • Five years or more of job experience in public relations, communications, or marketing roles or equivalent education. 

  • Passion for storytelling. 

  • Excellent interpersonal communication before consumers, trade contacts, meeting planners, travel media, and staff. 

  • Creativity in devising new ways of highlighting Anchorage core strengths. 

  • Digital proficiency including a working knowledge of storytelling applications and tools, including website content management systems and Office. 

  • Demonstrated effective time management skills, organizational skills, self-motivation, flexibility, and ability to meet deadlines while managing multiple projects. 

  • Ability to make new community partnerships with stakeholders and enhance relationships with local tourism businesses. 

  • Work requires a valid driver’s license. 

Preferred 

  • Diverse knowledge of Anchorage and Alaska’s travel industry, businesses, and product offerings. 

  • Photography, web design, video editing, graphic design, or other complimentary skillsets that enhance communications work. 

  • Familiarity with a CRM or database software (Simpleview, Salesforce, etc.). 

 

Pay & Benefits  

The salary range for this position is between $60,000 and $65,000, commensurate with experience. 

Visit Anchorage is committed to a healthy work/life balance. 

Full-time employees receive 80 hours of paid vacation annually, with the prospect of more after 5 years of employment. Visit Anchorage also offers up to 144 hours of paid personal leave for personal appointments, illness, and emergencies. Visit Anchorage observes 11 holidays, one floating holiday, and an added day off in the employee’s birth month. 

Visit Anchorage provides a 401(k) plan for eligible employees after one year of service and contributes an amount equal to 5% of individual wages. 

Visit Anchorage allows up to 12 weeks for family or medical leave for the birth of an employee's child, placement of a child with the employee for adoption or foster care, or in the event an employee is unable to perform the functions of his/her job due to health condition or is needed to care for a child, spouse, or parent who has a serious health condition. 

Visit Anchorage pays the premium for group life, and a percentage of health and dental insurance for employees. 

Physical Demands and Work Environment: 

While performing duties, the employee is regularly required to stand or sit for extended periods of time. The employee is occasionally required to walk, stoop, kneel, or crouch. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, and ability to adjust focus.
