Content Specialist - Visit Anchorage

Position Summary

In accordance with the Visit Anchorage mission, this position works under the supervision of the Director of Content and Engagement in the Communications & Public Affairs (C&PA) department to elevate the image of Anchorage before leisure travelers and expand awareness of Visit Anchorage programs through compelling public communications.

Essential Job Functions

  • Assists in development of external communications in brand voice
  • Develops internal and partner communications in concert with Director of Content and Engagement
  • Supports execution of the domestic and international travel media relations program

Position travel as a leading economic generator for Anchorage and Visit Anchorage as a community leader (40%)

  • Assists in the writing of Visit Anchorage publications, reports, speeches, news releases, brochures, advertisements, newsletters, fact sheets, e-communications, presentations, and web content
  • At the direction of the Director of Content & Engagement, research and write partner newsletters and e-communications, relating upcoming high-value Visit Anchorage programs, projects and events of note to members and the wider community

Engage visitors that best align with Anchorage and its product mix (40%)

  • Seeks out new travel trends, product and businesses in Anchorage leisure travel
  • Researches, writes, moderates and maintains the online leisure calendar of events on
  • Working with the Director of Content and Engagement, identifies needs for creating, editing, publishing, and retiring content to maintain prominence of among travel sites
  • Answers traveler questions posed via email, social media, and travel-related forums
  • Maintains Visit Anchorage video and photo library; identifies needs for new assets

Stimulate demand for Anchorage as a travel destination (20%)

  • Assists the C&PA Operations Manager in development of familiarization media tour itineraries
  • Works with the C&PA Operations Manager to host travel media in Anchorage and surrounding communities, especially in February to March and May through September, often involving weekend and evening work
  • Promptly fulfills journalist requests including research, fact-checking, trip planning and requests for digital assets
  • Using Simpleview CRM, maintains the database of travel writers, photographers, editors and related media associates and their activities related to the destination
  • Provide companywide administrative support including Front Desk Receptionist duties on a rotation substitutive basis as requested/available

Essential Knowledge, Skills, and Experience

A successful candidate will have demonstrated expertise in most of the following areas:

Education & Experience

  • A four-year college degree in public relations, journalism, marketing or communications
  • Three to four years of relevant public relations, journalism or marketing experience
  • Past work in newsroom or public relations writing and editing
  • Working knowledge of Anchorage and Alaska destination product
  • Hospitality industry experience is a plus
  • Media training is a plus
  • This position requires a valid driver’s license


  • Creativity and curiosity
  • Excellent oral and written skills including a command of English grammar, usage and vocabulary with the ability to speak one-on-one or to groups of media, members, travel writers and staff
  • Proficiency in AP style
  • Attention to detail and proofreading
  • Understanding of research methods and best practices
  • Familiarity with investigative/diagnostic tools like Google Analytics
  • Advanced computer skills with a major emphasis on procedure development and file management including working knowledge of Windows, Adobe Creative Cloud applications, Office 2013, and Simple View information management software (or similar) and other relevant software
  • Working knowledge of social media and web applications
  • Ability to type 45 wpm with accuracy

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit for extended periods of time, stand and walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; talk or hear.  The employee is occasionally required to stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.  The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, and ability to adjust focus.  Position requires the ability to fly (economy) for long distances, carrying and lifting luggage and promotional materials (approx. 50 lbs.), standing at events, assembling event displays and display area, and packing needed materials.

Work environment:

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.  May be exposed to extreme weather or climate while traveling and performing other duties.
