Anchorage celebrates one of Alaska’s most abundant resources – wild Alaska salmon – through the annual Wild Salmon on Parade (WSOP).
Each year, artists design wacky, whimsical and definitely wild salmon statues that swim throughout downtown Anchorage from early June through late August, and go to auction at season close during the annual Fish Fry & Buy dinner auction in September.
Reeling from successful runs in 2003, 2004 and 2005, the 2006 Wild Salmon on Parade will feature 20 four-foot, artistically transformed salmon sculptures. Maps will be available online with the chance to cast a favorite Wild Salmon vote beginning June 2006.
Wild Salmon on Parade is designed as an annual festival, modeled after Cows on Parade in Chicago and the Pigs on Parade in Seattle. The event and surrounding activities increase community awareness and appreciation of salmon habitat, history and physical properties.
Each fish is sponsored by an organization or business. The 2005 auction generated $75,000 for local charities. The 2006 charities include Camp Fire USA Alaska Council, the Anchorage Concert Association and the Alaska Conservation Foundation.
