Artist: Vonnie Gaither
Map Number: 10
Location: Anchorage Museum of History and Art, 7th Avenue & A Street
Bio: Splat Salmon, dripped and splattered with a multitude of brilliant colors and midnight-black hide, may look messy at first glance, but take another look. Each stroke is an emotion, a reaction to growth and change. Artist Vonnie Gaither created Splatt for the viewer to enjoy the color and freedom of the salmon. Gaither, who came to Alaska in 1970, usually paints with everything laid out like Jackson Pollock – so this 2-dimentional piece was quite a challenge.
