Anchorage is Wild About Salmon (2003)

Salmon are running wild through Anchorage this year in more than just Ship Creek - it’s “Wild Salmon on Parade.” Twenty-one wacky, whimsical, and definitely wild salmon statues are on display at various locations throughout downtown Anchorage.

“Wild Salmon on Parade” celebrates one of Alaska’s unique and abundant resources – a one-of-a-kind delicacy. The summer-long event kicks off with the Ship Creek King Salmon Derby in June and ends with the Ship Creek Silver Salmon Derby in August.

In addition to a Wild Salmon walking tour, the 3-month Wild Salmon event will include many additional activities. Local restaurants will feature special Wild Salmon delicacies on their menus throughout the summer, and a race celebration for Humpy's Marathon includes a fish festival in Town Square. The fish sculptures will be auctioned at the Fish Fry & Buy dinner auction on Sept. 13, 2003.

Download a walking tour map featuring the Wild Salmon locations here, or pick up a map at the Anchorage Convention & Visitors Bureau (ACVB) Log Cabin and Downtown Visitor Information Center at 4th Avenue and F Street. A virtual tour is provided on this site as well, with a chance to cast a favorite Wild Salmon vote.

The “Wild Salmon on Parade” is designed as an annual festival, modeled after Cows on Parade in Chicago and the Pigs on Parade in Seattle. The event and surrounding activities will increase community awareness and appreciation of salmon habitat, history and physical properties. Each salmon is created by local artists and sponsored by an organization or business.

Proceeds from the Fish Fry & Buy dinner auction will benefit Foster Grandparents and Senior Companion Programs of Alaska, the Anchorage Cultural Council and the Anchorage Waterways council.
