Anchorage is a great city to explore with or without renting a vehicle. Like any metropolitan city, there are many transportation options including taxis, limousines, bicycles, motor coaches, and public bus service. Attractions outside the downtown core offer free shuttles during summer. Hop on the Alaska Native Heritage Center shuttle to learn about Alaska Native customs of both past and present.

Take the free Alaska Zoo shuttle from the Visit Anchorage Information Center on Fourth Avenue and F Street, and enjoy the daily Naturalist Tour.

Lolly the Trolley circulates downtown during summer before arriving at The Ulu Factory. Pronounced “ooloo,” this special knife was invented centuries ago by the Inuit (Eskimo) people of northern Alaska.

Make advance arrangements to be picked up by the Grizzly Junction shuttle and head for the Sourdough Mining Company Restaurant for dinner, The Adventures of Dusty Sourdough show and a tour of the Wild Berry Park and Village.

Going the Distance

See the sites in and around Anchorage from an entirely new perspective. Trek across meadows, mountains and streams on foot, horse, mountain bike or ATV. Dog sled across an ice field, hop on a Segway for a downtown adventure. Paddle along a pristine lake for a peaceful journey. Peddle along the shores of Cook Inlet for a slow and scenic ride – multi-use trails crisscross the city and bike rentals are readily available.

Public Bus Transportation

The local public transit system, People Mover, provides access all around Anchorage and north to the community of Eagle River. Regular service is available weekdays from 6:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. with limited service evenings until 11 p.m. weekends and holidays. The People Mover Transit Center, 6th Avenue and G Street, has information, maps and a handy guide titled "Places To Go By Bus."

Adult bus fare is $1.75, $1 for youth (ages 5-18) and 50 cents for senior citizens (60+). A People Mover Day Pass is available for purchase from bus drivers for $5, $1.25 for seniors and people with disabilities, and allows unlimited rides on all People Mover bus routes for one calendar day.
