Anchorage can be a great one day stop if you plan it well. After getting off the ship, head to the Visit Anchorage Information Center. In addition to some great photo opportunities, you’ll also find people who know Anchorage and can give you the latest on what is going on around town. The log cabin is also a stop for several shuttle services that take visitors to area attractions such as The Alaska Zoo, Alaska Native Heritage Center and much more.

Head over to the Anchorage Museum for a look at Alaska’s past and present. From ancient artifacts to modern works of art, it’s well worth the trip. Interested in what happened during the ’64 quake? Hear from those who were there in a movie about the Good Friday Earthquake at The Alaska Experience Theatre. Stop at The Bear Square for all kinds of entertainment including movies, tours and a chance to try panning for gold.

Enjoy wild caught Alaska seafood at any one of the downtown restaurants. They aim to create a dish that’s appetizing to the eye as well as the palate. Anchorage also has great some great brews. Whether coffee or beer, it’s guaranteed to be top quality and fresh. For those in a hurry, try a reindeer hotdog from a street vendor. From mild to spicy, with onions or without, the choice is yours.

Get out and stretch a bit with a walk or bike along the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail. Bike rentals are by the hour and are available from several downtown vendors. The 11 mile path runs south and hugs the coastline most of the way. Make sure the camera is handy because there are plenty of picture taking opportunities along the way.

Shop ‘til you drop in downtown Anchorage. The galleries and boutiques stay open late so you have time to pick up a unique souvenir. From hand carved ivory statues and beaded jewelry to ulu knives and colorful t-shirts, gifts for friends and family will be purchased in no time.

Before returning to ship, stop at a wine bistro for a short rest. Servers know their wine, despite the distance from California. While there sample some amazing appetizers from world class chefs that call Anchorage home.
