When it comes to performing arts in Anchorage, there’s no such thing as the same ole’ song and dance. The city dazzles with dancers and actors and sizzles with singers and musicians, and they’re supported by a community that craves and celebrates the diversity of arts.
The arts scene is buoyant and vital here, serving as entertainment, expression and inspiration. The arts also are a link and tribute to Alaska’s past; they create a connection to artists beyond The Last Frontier; and they offer a spotlight for local and visiting artists to shine.
The Alaska Center for the Performing Arts is a vibrant gathering place, which presents a diverse lineup each season, from Broadway’s best to premieres of classical symphonies to acoustic concerts that feel as intimate as any parlor jam session.
Traveling singer-songwriters frequent local coffeehouses, bars and restaurants. Alaska Native artists dance, sing, drum and tell traditional stories. Local theater thrives, often presenting original works by area playwrights. Even Hollywood has a role for Anchorage: A handful of major motion pictures have been filmed here in recent years, so be on the lookout for stars as they walk the streets or frequent downtown cafes.
And then there are Anchorage’s homegrown stars. The local performing arts scene is creative, smart and, at times, quirky. The artists often cast a reflection of true Alaskans: proud, independent, resourceful and hardworking. If it can be pulled off, Anchorage artists do it. And sometimes they even go for it when it can’t entirely be pulled off.
Locals dance classical ballet, modern hip-hop and a little burlesque. They sing in choirs and operas, with electric guitars and tinkling pianos. They slam poetry like heavyweight champs. And they act in plays in living room settings and under big stage lights.
Anchorage’s arts scene reflects the local vibe with its come-as-you-are attitude. Expect art fans to roll out in fleece and flip-flops for community theater and pull out the black ties and sequins for opening-night galas. And they’ll be found in all wears for the monthly First Friday art walk, which has become so popular that it’s outgrown local galleries and traditional visual arts and now stretches throughout a variety of venues and includes the occasional performing art complement.
