Girdwood Alaska -- March 20, 2004

Alaska’s Favorite Alpine Champions Thrill Crowd at Alyeska

The Chevrolet 2004 U.S. Alpine Championships had a special treat for spectators and racers alike with the fun-run Return of the Champions race held Saturday, March 19, 2004, at the Alyeska Resort in Girdwood, Alaska. Former Olympic and World Cup champions competed in teams against each other in elimination heat-style relay races. Cheering, enthusiastic spectators crowded the viewing area and climbed snow banks for a better vantage point.

Crowd favorites were Alaska’s past Olympic medallists Tommy Moe, Megan Gerety, and Hillary Lindh who still thrill with their lightening fast skiing. The mood was lighthearted and the skiers good-natured as they rallied through the gates. Fans lined the exit chute hoping to catch a glimpse of their favorite skier, snap a picture or get an autograph. Here, Tommy Moe stops to sign the ski helmet of this happy young admirer.
