Southcentral Alaska businesses and organizations are supporting our state, our communities and our country’s athletes by sponsoring the Chevrolet 2004 U.S. Alpine Championships at Alyeska Resort this month.

The championships receive national sponsorship each year. And this year, Alaska businesses and organizations are donating time, personnel, money, products, services and equipment to help make the event a success for the area and the state.

FedEx, Pepsi Bottling Group, Alaska Mining and Diving and the Anchorage Convention & Visitors Bureau are among the top local contributors for the event. Alaska Mining and Diving is providing snow machines for mountain and race crew. And the Pepsi Bottling Group is sponsoring the opening ceremonies at 7 p.m. Friday, March 19.

“We offer a lot of support in those resorts that are Pepsi accounts and partners, and Alyeska is a partner,” said Cliff Kraemer, director of sales and marketing for the Pepsi Bottling Group. “The opening ceremonies were where Alyeska needed the most support, and we wanted to help support that to pull off the event and make it exciting.”

Several local businesses are also providing valuable services to the event. The ACVB is assisting with advertising and media and public relations. And because a large portion of race equipment must be brought up from the Lower 48, FedEx is donating in-kind shipping for race-related gear including gates and skis.

“FedEx is just trying to help out with community relations and events,” said Colleen Bobbie, managing director’s assistant at FedEx. “The global coverage is an added benefit.”

The championships also require large amounts of man power, and many organizations are contributing valuable time and personnel for the event. The Alaska State Troopers, Anchorage School District, Pepsi, Providence Alaska Medical Center and the U.S. Forest Service are among those providing personnel throughout the races.

Each year, businesses from all over the country support this nationally televised event. Not only do contributors help to make the event possible, but they also gain national recognition for themselves and the state.

“It’s going to bring a lot of money into the community,” Kraemer said.

The 2004 championships will be at Alyeska from March 18?23. For more information, visit www.alyeskaresort.com.
