Anchorage, Alaska – February 11, 2004

ANCHORAGE TO HOST 26 CONVENTIONS IN FEBRUARY

Several sporting competitions, two trade shows and 26 conventions will bring 7,977 people to Anchorage this month, with an estimated economic impact (EEI) of $8,174,195.

"This is the busiest February convention season Anchorage has had in a decade," said Bruce Bustamante, president and CEO of Anchorage Convention & Visitors Bureau (ACVB). "The record breaking month is almost double February 2003."

Some of the larger conventions in town this month include the Alaska Forum on the Environment Convention Feb. 9 - 13, 2004, at the William A. Egan Civic & Convention Center with 1,000 delegates; the Alaska Surveying & Mapping Conference Feb. 10 - 13, 2004, at the Hilton Anchorage with 500 delegates; the Bilingual Multicultural Education Conference Feb. 11 - 13, 2004, at the Sheraton Anchorage Hotel with 700 delegates; Alaska Statewide Special Education Conference Feb. 21 - 27, 2004, at the Sheraton with 650 delegates; Southcentral Foundation Native New Life Gathering from Feb. 22 - 25, 2004, at the Hilton Anchorage with 500 delegates and, the International Airlines Ski Federation World Airlines Ski Championship from Feb. 29 - March 4, 2004, at the Alyeska Prince Hotel with 500 delegates. The Winter Cities Conference, Feb. 18 - 22, 2004, Fur Rendezvous, Feb. 20 - March 7, 2004, and the Pac-Rim Expo, Feb. 18 - 19, 2004, bring a combined EEI to Anchorage of $3,000,151.

ACVB booked 50 conventions in January that will bring 13,562 people to the city between now and 2006 with an EEI of $8,599,422. The largest convention booked is the United Transportation Union Conference from June 12 - 15, 2005, with 1,100 delegates. Other groups booked include the Substance Abuse Directors Association in May 2005 with 600 delegates, the Stewart Title Guaranty Company Regional Conference in August 2004, with 100 delegates and the National Telecommunications Cooperative Association in August 2006 with 200 delegates.

The Anchorage Convention & Visitors Bureau's mission is to attract and serve visitors to the Municipality of Anchorage. ACVB's marketing functions are funded by half of the bed tax collected by hotels. The other half goes the Municipality's general fund. ACVB receives no state or federal funds.
