STATE AND REGIONAL MEETINGS BRING REVENUE TO ANCHORAGE

ANCHORAGE, ALASKA (Oct. 23, 3003) - Thirty state and regional meetings are taking place in Anchorage during the month of October, bringing more than 10,000 people to the city who will spend an estimated $4.2 million. The largest meeting, the Alaska Federation of Natives' Youth & Elders Convention, Oct.19-22, and Annual Alaska Federation of Natives (AFN) Conference, Oct. 23-25, will bring nearly 4,000 people to the city, with an estimated economic impact of $1,570,886.

"While it's not a record, this October has turned out to be excellent for hosting local meetings, with numbers that demonstrates the impact statewide meeting have to our overall economy," said Bruce Bustamante, president and CEO of the Anchorage Convention & Visitors Bureau (ACVB).

Local meetings made up 30 of the total meetings held in Anchorage for the month of October. In addition to AFN, some of the larger meetings have included the Alaska District of Youth Ministries State Youth Convention (Oct.2-4) and the Alaska State Literacy Conference (Oct. 17-19), each with 1,000 delegates, and the Alaska Recreation & Parks Association Regional Conference (Oct.13-19) and Alaska Broadcasters Association Annual Convention (Oct. 23-24), each with 500 delegates.

A total of 36 groups including 26 state meetings, four regional meetings, five national conventions, one international convention and four trade shows will be held in Anchorage in October. All combined, those meetings will bring more than 13,000 delegates to Anchorage, with a total estimated economic impact of $13,433,171 for the month of October.

The Anchorage Convention & Visitors Bureau's mission is to attract and serve visitors to the Municipality of Anchorage. ACVB's marketing functions are funded by half of the bed tax collected by hotels. The other half goes to the Municipality's general fund. ACVB receives no state or federal funds.
