That’s the favorite saying of my new best friend, Captain Dianne Dubuc, owner of Alaska Saltwater Charters.
Last year, I hosted a Japanese film crew through a southcentral Alaska experience. I arranged a Resurrection Bay day cruise with a twist: winter king salmon fishing! Well, we’re hooked! This is fishing at its best!!! My husband and I have fished with Dianne seven times since last November! We caught fish EVERY TIME!
Winter kings are the BEST because they’re just hanging out, and don’t have other things on their minds (like the spawning salmon do…!), they just keep on eating. The flesh is tender, marbled, and chock full of healthy Omega-3 oils. It’s like eating salmon flavored butter!
As for the fishing experience, talk about comfort! The F/V Florette C. is a very roomy 53’ vessel. There’s room for everyone to stay warm and cozy inside, and the fishing cockpit is very comfortable. I know this sounds silly, but the Florette C. has a nicer head (toilet) than I do, complete with padded seat and FRESH flowers!
You never have to touch a fish. The deck boss does all the baiting, setting rods, gaffing or netting, and cleaning. All you do is watch the rod tip and when it jumps, you reel like crazy! Of course you’ll want to hold your fish for that fabulous trophy photo!
