UNIVERSITY OF ALASKA ANCHORAGE HOSTS AIR FORCE, UMASS-LOWELL & MIAMI 12TH ANNUAL NYE FRONTIER CLASSIC HOCKEY TOURNAMENT

Hockey fans from across the nation will travel to Anchorage, Alaska next month for top-rate college hockey action. The University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA) hosts the 2003 Nye Frontier Classic on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 17 – 18, 2003, at the Sullivan Arena. This year’s competing teams are the Air Force Academy Falcons, Miami RedHawks, UMass-Lowell River Hawks and the host team UAA Seawolves.

“Hockey fans can see some of the top college teams in the country play in a world-class sports arena while visiting Anchorage during the beautiful fall season,” said Bruce Bustamante, president and CEO of the Anchorage Convention & Visitors Bureau (ACVB).

The Air Force Academy Falcons will make their second appearance in the Classic, having made their first in 1999. The Falcons, coached by Frank Serratore, finished sixth in the 2002 – 2003 College Hockey America (CHA) season with an overall record of 10-24-3. The UMass-Lowell River Hawks are first-timers to the Classic. The River Hawks, coached by Blaise MacDonald, in his second season are coming off an 11-20-5 season and an eighth-place finish in Hockey East.

Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) member, Miami Redhawks, will also make their first appearance in the Classic. Coach Enrico Blasi led the Redhawks to two, 20-win seasons in his four years at Miami. The Redhawks finished in the top half of the CCHA in 2002-03 (13-12-3), ending the regular-season in a tie for fifth.

UAA rounds out the Classic’s field of four teams. The Seawolves won the tournament in the 1988 – 89 and 1990 - 91 seasons.

The Anchorage Convention & Visitors Bureau’s mission is to attract and serve visitors to the Municipality of Anchorage.
