10/11/02 - Busy Convention Season Boosts Anchorage

NEWS RELEASE

Anchorage, Alaska – October 11, 2002

"Busy Convention Season Boosts Anchorage Economy"

The Anchorage economy will see a boost of more than $22 million during the last quarter, October through December 2002, from meetings, conventions and trade shows taking place throughout the city. As a hub city within Alaska, Anchorage boasts the largest range of accommodations, meeting facilities, and experiences for meeting delegates, all easily accessible within city limits – from Eklutna to Girdwood. The Anchorage Convention & Visitors Bureau (ACVB) and member businesses work closely with companies and individuals to bring state, regional, national, and international meetings, conventions, trade shows, and events to Anchorage. "Hotels, restaurants, transportation vendors and service-oriented companies are among the many businesses to benefit from the hundreds of conventions and meetings that take place in Anchorage during the fall, winter and spring," said Bruce Bustamante, ACVB's president and CEO. "Tourism is Alaska's second largest industry, and as such, conventions are a measurable return on investment with definite economic impact."

The Anchorage Convention & Visitors Bureau’s mission is to attract and serve visitors to the Municipality of Anchorage, which has been named an All-America City by the National Civic League in 1956, 1965, 1984, and 2002. The All-America City distinction makes Anchorage one of only seven cities nationwide to receive the award four or more times since its inception in 1949. ACVB’s marketing functions are funded by half of the bed tax collected by hotels. The other half goes to the Municipality’s general fund. ACVB receives no state or federal funds.
