Ice Skating and Hockey

A winter day at Westchester Lagoon

A winter day at Westchester Lagoon

Don a pair of skates glide away the hours at Town Square, downtown Anchorage, which is transformed into an ice rink with free skating events weekends through March.

Social skaters seeking a scene straight out of a postcard can kick around the warming barrels and laughing families at Westchester Lagoon, while puck-chasing gamers in search of a pick-up game can test their skills at Chester Creek Sports Complex.

The complex features two hockey rinks with day and night time skating, while the lagoon ice is plowed in preparation for Saturday skating events that sometimes feature live music and concessions.

In addition to five maintained outdoor ice rinks on area lakes and five indoor rinks, many schools in Anchorage have outdoor hockey rinks that may be used or rented through the school district’s resources department.

Spectators can watch fast paced college hockey and minor-league professional hockey each winter at the Sullivan Arena. View the Alaska Aces and the UAA Seawolves game schedules.

Outdoor rinks

  • Westchester Lagoon
  • Cheney Lake
  • Goose Lake
  • Jewel Lake
  • Spenard Lake

The ice is usually thick enough on Southcentral Alaska lakes by mid-November or early December. Always play it safe, though. Thin ice lifesaving tips to remember
