Aviation has long been a lifeline to rural Alaska ("the bush") - an integral part to the state's history and development. Today, the state remains the most "flyingest" in the country, with about six times as many pilots per capita as the rest of the United States - undoubtedly due to the vast size and inaccessibility of the vast majority of the state.
A variety of dependable operations offer year-round personalized flights or charters from Anchorage via floatplane, fixed wing, helicopter, and even a classic DC-3 with 1940's style service. Flights depart from the Anchorage International Airport, Merrill Field, Lake Hood Air Harbor. Lake Hood, next to the Anchorage International Airport, is the world’s busiest floatplane base. Merrill Field is located two miles east of downtown Anchorage.
