Travel Through Canada - Customs

Driving to Alaska takes you through some beautiful areas of Canada, and through customs. Before you pull up to the border crossing, be prepared for Canada's requirements.

Proof of Citizenship

A customs officer may ask to see your passport and a valid visa, if necessary. If you are a resident or citizen of the United States, you do not need a passport or visa to enter Canada. However, you should carry proof of your citizenship, such as a birth certificate, certificate of citizenship, or naturalization certificate.

Vehicles

Each vehicle should have a registration and proof of insurance. If you are not driving your own vehicle, bring along an authorization letter from the owner.

Firearms

The Canadian government is now requiring all motorists carrying hunting-type firearms across the border to obtain an Alaskan Possession and Acquisition license (PAL). The new requirement took effect January 1. Firearms may be registered online at the Canadian Firearms Center web site or call 800-731-4000 for more information. Other types of firearms may require different permits or may be prohibited.

Pets

Household dogs and cats must have a current rabies vaccination certificate from a veterinarian. This certificate is not required for seeing-eye dogs or puppies and kittens under three months old.
