Homer, Alaska

People from around the world travel the Sterling Highway to fish the Russian and Kenai rivers. In fact, the world's record king salmon, 97.25 pounds (43.8 kg) was caught on the Peninsula.

Established in 1942 by homesteaders, Soldotna sits at the intersection of roads to Kenai and Homer, forming the Peninsula's hub where you can find endless recreational opportunities including rafting, hiking and fishing during the summer. It's a favorite winter destination for cross-country skiing, snowmobiling and more.

Reminders of Alaska's Russian past can be found in Kenai, begun in 1791 when Russian fur traders settled on the banks at the mouth of the Kenai River and Cook Inlet. Look for the Russian Orthodox Church and Fort Kenay, built by the U.S. Army in 1869 in Old Town. Kenai is the largest city in the Peninsula with a population of almost 7,000. At the Kenai Visitors & Cultural Center find an impressive permanent collection of Native Alaskan and historical artifacts, wildlife exhibits.

A cozy arts and fishing community, Homer overlooks Kachemak Bay, one of the most beautiful bays in the world. Halibut charters are readily available, and bald eagles congregate on the beach. Fishing is available year-round, though there are periodic closures for high and low seasons.

Visit the Pratt Museum or wander through the many arts and crafts shops. Across the bay you can visit the art galleries at Halibut Cove or learn about Seldovia's unique blend of Russian and Native cultures at the Seldovia Village Tribe's museum and the St. Nicholas Orthodox Church, a National Historic site built in 1891.
