Hope, Alaska
Look for the Hope turn-off south of Portage Glacier Highway. The winding 17-mile road leads to a once-thriving gold rush town of 2,000 people begun in 1896.
Today, Hope is a quiet town of about 200, but you can still enjoy the same stunning views of the ocean surrounded by jutting mountains that the miners did. Learn the area's unique gold rush story at the Hope and Sunrise Museum, across the street from the post office.
Established in 1923, Hope Mining Company, Inc. offers visitors a chance to mine on a Historical WORKING Placer Mine.
Several hiking trails offer scenic vistas of the region. Take a stroll overlooking the inlet to Gull Rock or explore the tundra-carpeted Palmer Valley. Experienced hikers can trek the 38 mile (61 km) Resurrection Pass Trail.
