Athleticism, Sense of Humor Pre-Requisites for Upcoming Hero Games
Anchorage, Alaska – June 10, 2009 – The idea of the Hero Games was born last summer when the National Firefighters Combat Challenge came to Anchorage from the Lower 48. Last year’s Combat Challenge demonstrated a wicked level of fitness, perseverance and commitment by each team member. It was a very spectator-friendly event. This year’s Hero Games is Saturday, June 27, 2009, and features teams of five individuals (one female) from the Army, Air Force, Air Force Reserves, Air National Guard, Marines, Anchorage Police & Troopers, Anchorage Fire Fighters and AMST First Aid Team. Although athletic prowess and mental focus are required for these games, a well-developed sense of humor will also serve teams well. There will be an obstacle course featuring a tire change on a police vehicle, a donut-eating challenge and a rescue of a stuffed cat. Other games include Water Balloon Volleyball, Litter Carry Relay and Bucket Brigade.
All part of the 50th anniversary of statehood, the Hero Games is just one element of the Alaska Statehood Celebration taking place Saturday, June 27, 2009, from noon until 5 p.m. in downtown Anchorage on Fourth Avenue between C and H streets. There will be live entertainment featured on three stages, an artist fair, street performers, an antique car show, a professional skateboard competition, and for the kids: a look back at the toys of the 1950s, including Mr. Potato Head, silly putty and the hula-hoop. There will also be a huge sand box and face painting for the kids.
