See More Gold in Anchorage, Alaska

Anchorage, Alaska – May 15, 2009 – Visitors to Anchorage, Alaska get a bigger bang for their buck with the Anchorage Convention & Visitors Bureau (ACVB) Gold Card program, which launched this week. The program recognizes visitors for extending their stays in Anchorage and encourages them to experience more of what the city offers through upgrades, discounts, or special offers at participating businesses. The program provides hotel reservation staff an additional tool to encourage visitors to book an extra night in Anchorage.

“The Gold Card is an informal packaging concept between hoteliers and members designed to celebrate Alaska’s 50th anniversary of statehood and enhance the visitor experience to Anchorage by encouraging them to explore our local businesses and experience more of what Anchorage has to offer,” said David Kasser, ACVB vice president of Tourism Development & Sales. “We’ve emphasized the value-added or enhanced experience, but many businesses are offering discounts, too.”

Visitors obtain the Gold Card when they check into their hotel or bed and breakfast if staying two or more nights. The card, which is one-by-two inches in size, features the 50th Anniversary of Statehood logo on one side and the ACVB logo on a shiny gold background on the other. Visitors show the card to participating businesses, which may display a decal in the window or at the point-of-sale. Offers vary from business to business. The Alaska Aviation Heritage Museum is offering an aviation heritage poster, while the Anchorage Museum is highlighting its “Gold” exhibit with a free gift to Gold Card holders in the museum’s “Gold” shop. The Downtown Bicycle Rental is offering a special discount on its Alaska Statehood Anniversary bicycle jersey, while the Flattop Shuttle is providing complimentary ice cream and bottled water for Gold Card holders on its $22 shuttle to Flattop. Gold Card offers, which continue to be added to daily, are available at www.Anchorage.net/gold.

Visiting friends and relatives can also take part in the Gold Card program, even if they are not staying at a hotel, by stopping by the Log Cabin Visitor Information Center at the corner of Fourth Avenue and F Street to pick up a card. “Our goal is to reward all visitors for choosing Anchorage for their stay,” added Kasser.

The Anchorage Convention & Visitors Bureau’s mission is to attract and serve visitors to the Municipality of Anchorage as a Destination Marketing Organization. ACVB’s marketing functions are funded by one-third of the bed tax collected by lodging associations. One-third goes to the Municipality’s general fund, a contribution established in 1978, and one-third to service the bond debt and operations of the Anchorage Convention Centers. ACVB receives no state or federal funds. Explore www.Anchorage.net for more information.
