Mount Redoubt Volcano Update for Alaska Visitors

Located in Lake Clark National Park, roughly 100 miles southwest of Anchorage, Alaska’s 10,200-foot Mount Redoubt volcano erupted Sunday, March 22, 2009, with a series of subsequent blows in the days following.

As of Wednesday, April 1, 2009, the Alaska Volcano Observatory reports continuing low level emissions of steam, gases and ash from the volcano. No ashfall alerts are in effect at this time.

Volcanic activity is not all that unusual for Alaska. Airlines serving Alaska have a great deal of practice with eruptions and they are very proactive in avoiding any encounter with ash. Likewise, the Ted Stevens International Airport has experienced ash fall previously and has plans in place to deal with such an event.

The Alaska Volcano Observatory is watching the volcano closely 24 hours per day and will notify the FAA and the airlines immediately should an eruption occur and disruptive ash clouds and ash fall be expected. Flights in and out of Anchorage could be temporarily delayed or canceled, usually at the most for a day or two.

If you plan to visit Anchorage and Southcentral Alaska soon, here are some travel tips to help diminish the inconvenience of interrupted air travel.

  • Keep an eye on news reports; links below.
  • Pack a carry on with overnight supplies.
  • Make sure cell phones are charged; carry a charger.
  • Pack entertainment for little ones.
  • Have a contingency plan just in case.

Lastly, be prepared to enjoy the scenic, recreational, and inspirational benefits of being near an active volcano!
