Alaska 50th Anniversary of Statehood Delegate’s Reception

Anchorage, Alaska - Dec. 30, 2008 – A reception will be hosted by Conoco Phillips at the ConocoPhillips Atrium Jan. 2, 2009, from 2 – 4 p.m. for all of the statewide delegates participating in the 50th Anniversary of Statehood Celebration. The delegates will sign a large Pledge of State Unity, expressing mutual respect for Alaska’s diverse cultures and values.

The signing will take place at about 2:30 p.m. “This act symbolizes our commitment to working together to fulfill Alaska’s extraordinary potential,” Said Tennys Owens, co-planner and coordinator for the Anchorage Statehood Celebration. Copies of the pledge will be sent to each delegate as well as to school districts statewide.

The delegates will be taking part in the Alaska 50th Anniversary of Statehood Celebration Day, Jan. 3, 2009, beginning at 3:30 with a procession through down town Anchorage, followed by the ceremonial lighting of the Light of the North, a Beacon to the Future, at the corner of 7th Avenue and E Street. Delegates were chosen by their communities as representatives in the statewide celebration in Anchorage. Each will wear garments that reflect their hometown location in Alaska and carry a sign identifying the community they are representing as well as a torch.
