Go Green, Win Green at Ski for Woman on Super Bowl Sunday: The Return of the Costume Contest and Other Additions Expected to Bring More Female Skiers to the Trails
Anchorage, Alaska – Dec. 2, 2008– Anchorage, Alaska’s 13th annual Ski for Women (ASFW), slated for Feb. 1, 2009, at Anchorage, Alaska’s Kincaid Park, has consistently proven to be a wildly fun event that gets women of all ages and abilities together for a short 2.4-mile (4 K) cross-country ski adventure. The entry fee for this fabulously female event is a donation to ASFW grants that benefit local non-profit organizations working to stop the cycle of domestic abuse against women and children. This year will see the addition of even more reasons to head out to Anchorage’s stellar trail system on Super Bowl Sunday.
“You can go green and win some green at the 2009 ASWF,” says Robin Kornfield, ASFW organizer. “This year, we are bringing back the costume contest hosted by Anchorage Shop Girl, Leslie Boyd, who will be giving away amazing prizes including cash. We’re also trying to go as ‘green’ as we can this year – you know, to help out Mother Earth.”
This year ASWF is seeking ways to minimize the event’s environmental impact by searching for opportunities to implement the three “R’s” – recycle, reduce and reuse. There will also be a special costume contest category for best “Recycled” costume. The Super Bowl Sunday date isn’t the only aspect of ASSFW that’s unique: skiers must sign up as a pair or a group. Many women and girls enter the race to take in Anchorage’s amazing winter trails together and to showcase their creativity through zany costumes. Past years have seen an entire symphony on skis, Hawaiian hula skiers, cars of an Alaska Railroad train, French clowns, and even the "Aurora Girlealis.
“This event is the perfect time to get your friends together or bring your mom or daughters out to the trails to share a fun day and help support other women,” says Kornfield. “If you happen to be a football fan, don’t worry – you’ll make kick-off.”
While the organizers of the event all bearers of the XX chromosome, Kornfield says there’s definitely a place for the male of species at the event.
“We’d love to see more male volunteers,” says Kornfield. “This is an event the entire family, dad, brother, uncle and grandfather included, can participate in one way or another. We hope that the expanded event will encourage more men to come out and cheer the ladies on.”
The Alaska Ski for Women is still seeking sponsorships. Any business or individual interested in sponsoring the event should contact Robin Kornfield at 907-227-2424.
More than $60,000 in funds raised in the 2008 event was distributed to four Anchorage agencies: Abused Women’s Aid in Crisis (AWAIC), YWCA, Clare House, and Covenant House.
