WHAT
ALASKA HISTORY WALK: A JOURNEY OF STATEHOOD 1867 – 2009
WHO
- Sponsored by the Atwood Foundation, in commemoration of Alaska’s 50 years of statehood. The Anchorage Statehood Celebration Committee worked with the Alaska Historical Society, the University of Alaska, State of Alaska Department of Administration, and other Alaska contributors on the epic project. Individuals on the project include Tennys Owens, Nadine Winters, Steve Haycox, Penny Owens and Bobbie Bianchi, to name a few.
WHERE
- On eight columns on the north side of Seventh Avenue between E and F Streets.
WHY
- To provide a permanent legacy to Alaska history that will be enjoyed by locals and visitors of all ages.
DETAILS
- The Alaska History Walk: A Journey of Statehood, features 16 intricately designed bronze plaques. Each 18-inch square weighs 30 pounds and incorporates a historical photo and/or commemorative inscription about a significant event in Alaska’s rich past. The contoured, three-dimensional photo-relief images and text chronicle Alaska’s struggle to become a state, including several key events that transformed Alaska, as well as leaders and individuals who impacted or guided the territory’s journey to statehood. The story begins in 1867, when Alaska became part of the United States and ends in 2009 when Alaska celebrates its 50th Anniversary of Statehood.
