Geocaching Checklist

  • A GPS device
  • Extra batteries
  • Printout of the cache description from geocaching.com
  • A map of the general destination area
  • Trinkets to leave in cache(s)
  • writing utensil
  • Good walking shoes
  • A flashlight (even if geocaching in the daylight, some caches are hidden in or near dark areas)
  • A camera


Geocache Sizes:

  • Micro: 35 mm film canister or smaller –approximately 3 ounces or .1 litres – Contents: logbook
  • Small: Sandwich-sized container – less than approximately 1 quart or litre – Contents: trade items, logbook
  • Regular: Ammo can – Contents: trade items, logbook.
  • Large: 5 gallon/20 litre bucket or larger – Contents: trade items, logbook.

Difficulty / Terrain

Difficulty and terrain ratings let cachers know how hard it will be to find a cache.

  • 1 star terrain is wheelchair accessible.
  • 5 star terrain will requires specialized gear such as a 4x4 vehicle, snorkeling gear, repelling equipment, etc.
