Anchorage Attracts Conventions Year-Round
Anchorage, Alaska – Jan. 19, 2006 – Next week, the American Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT) will celebrate its 75th anniversary during its winter meeting in Anchorage, from Jan. 21 - 25, 2006. With an anticipated attendance of 1,100 delegates from across the country, this convention will provide a big boost to winter business in Anchorage.
The convention will have an estimated economic impact (EEI) of $1,167,175, benefiting numerous businesses from hotels and restaurants, to tour operators and gift shops. Day excursions offered to AAPT attendees range from ice climbing lessons to flightseeing, ensuring that their stay will not be limited to their hotel.
Another national organization, the American Association of Physical Anthropologists, will hold its annual conference in Anchorage from March 7 - 11, 2006, with 1,100 delegates and an EEI of $923,483. Other upcoming national conferences in Anchorage this winter include the National Auctioneers Association Winter Seminar and the CB Healing Institute Spa Directors Seminar.
“We continue to promote Anchorage as a year-round destination, especially for conventions,” says Bruce Bustamante, ACVB President and CEO. “Part of this is letting event planners know about the unique aspects Anchorage offers during winter and shoulder seasons. For many, the allure is already there—Alaska is a dream destination, setting it apart from other locations.”
Holding winter conventions in Anchorage also appeals to groups from within Alaska. Often off-season reduced room rates attract Alaska meeting planners to the city. Alaskans can take advantage of good prices and enjoy the relatively mild winter climate. Instate organizations holding conferences in Anchorage this month include the Anchorage Association for the Education of Young Children, the Junior Native Youth Olympics, the Alaska Kennel Club and The Alaska Support Industry, to name a few.
The Anchorage Convention & Visitors Bureau’s mission is to attract and serve visitors to the Municipality of Anchorage. ACVB’s marketing functions are funded by half of the bed tax collected by the lodging association. The other half goes to the Municipality’s general fund. ACVB receives no state or federal funds.
