Travel Agent Training 101

Training travel agents to sell Anchorage is a big part of what the Anchorage Convention & Visitors Bureau (ACVB) Tourism Development & Sales (TDS) does, and they do it locally – during fam season, nationally and internationally – often as a add-on while participating in travel trade shows.

In 2005, TDS will present “Destination Anchorage” and Southcentral Alaska to more than 30 tour operator and travel agent groups on separate fam tours that will be hosted by a variety of ACVB member partners including: Holland America, New World Tours, Alaska Travel Industry Association (ATIA) and others. The aim of these fams is to provide domestic and international market agents the tools to sell Anchorage effectively.

TDS strives to find creative ways to accommodate busy travel professionals’ schedules and give them a full understanding of what Anchorage has to offer their clients. Primarily, the work focuses on dispelling myths, the most common being that Anchorage is just a thru-way to the rest of the state. An “Anchorage graduate” should understand that Anchorage and Southcentral offers abundant services and tour options with plenty of capacity, and that their clients can experience intimate wilderness activities and metropolitan amenities all in the same day.

During the winter of 2004/05, TDS trained more than 1,000 travel professionals across the globe. The response was overwhelming – with immediate growth in bookings shown from focus areas. TDS frequently hears training attendees state that “I had no idea Anchorage had so much to offer in such a beautiful setting.”

If you are bringing a fam to town or have a group planning an Alaska trip, TDS can help give clients a broader view of Anchorage. Contact the For details, contact the Tourism Development & Sales department, 276-4118.
