Snowshoeing in Southcentral Alaska by Leah R. Boltz, President, PRSSA Seawolf Chapter
Looking for a unique and fun way to experience Alaska’s scenic winter wonderland? Whether it’s short jaunt for a novice or an overnight getaway for a seasoned trekker, snowshoeing is a great way to get out and enjoy the winter months in the north country.
Anchorage boasts hundreds of miles of designated multi-use trails that are perfect for snowshoeing and other winter activities. Areas such as Kincaid Park, the Hillside trail system, Hilltop Ski Area, Alpenglow at Arctic Valley, Powerline Pass and Turnagain Pass provide great wilderness snowshoeing adventures within a few minutes of downtown.
For a longer day or weekend trip there are countless opportunities outside of Anchorage and all over Southcentral Alaska. To the north, the Mat-Su Borough is one of the most popular areas for snowshoeing. Mat-Su Borough lakes, including Big Lake, Trapper Lake and Finger Lakes provide miles of great terrain for a leisurely stroll in picturesque country.
With nearly 40 miles of maintained trails and more than 130 lakes and ponds, snowshoeing enthusiasts will have plenty of trekking options to choose from at Nancy Lake State Recreation Area. A 90-minute drive north of Anchorage, this system of lakes, trails and public-use cabins makes for a great weekend trip. Hatcher Pass, located off of Palmer-Fishhook Road, is one of the Valley’s most popular spots for snowshoeing day trips. Along with the designated area trails, the area provides wide, open fields of untouched snow and spectacular scenery only accessible to those who wish to venture off the beaten path.
Eklutna Lake and Eagle River, just 15 to 20 minutes from Anchorage, also provide ideal family snowshoeing locations. Located at Mile 12 of Eagle River Road in the Eagle River Valley, the Eagle River Nature Center offers an extensive trail network, nature programs and guided hikes. A public-use cabin and yurt are available for rent on a reservation-only basis. The Nature Center’s close proximity to Anchorage makes it a great location for a day trek or weekend getaway. Trails range from easy, rolling valleys to rugged passes. You can also rent snowshoes here, but it’s best to reserve them well in advance by calling (907) 694-2108.
Popular routes from the Nature Center include the Albert Loop Trail (easy 3-mile/5 km loop with mixed terrain from forest to gravel bars of the glacial-fed Eagle River) and the Rodak Nature Trail (2/3-mile/1 km loop, with benches and interpretive signs).
Girdwood and Alyeska Resort to the South, along with other Chugach National Forest recreation areas on the Kenai Peninsula, also offer snowshoeing enthusiasts the opportunity to experience winter in Alaska like few others can.
“Whether you are trekking into the wilderness or just exploring some nearby trails, snowshoeing is a fun, easy and often necessary method of transport in Southcentral,” says Nathaniel Gates, a long-time Anchorage resident who recently discovered snowshoeing as a sport.
