Alaska Photo Safari (SATW Photographer’s Shoot-out)

The Alaska Photo Safari will precede the 2005 SATW Western Chapter Meeting in Anchorage, Alaska. Loosely patterned after the Day In The Life photo projects, this Dual Capture – film and digital – event offers photographers the opportunity to join a 29-hour shoot in Anchorage and the surrounding area. The best images will be exhibited at the final gala event – the Aurora Bora Bash.

Dates and Times
Participants should arrive in Anchorage by midday on Saturday, April 30, 2005. An organization dinner is at 4 p.m. and the Photo Safari begins at 5 p.m. Film is due at 10 p.m., Sunday, May 1, 2005. This extended Photo Safari provides the opportunity to shoot during two evenings.

Transportation and Accommodations
Transportation from the airport and accommodations for Saturday night at the Alyeska Prince Hotel will be provided at no extra charge.

A guide/driver will be assigned to each photographer at the dinner meeting. Meals on Sunday will be at the photographer’s expense. Traditionally, the photographer buys lunch for the guide/driver on Photo Safari day.

Rules and Regulations
Each photographer will be given an assignment category to fulfill during the Photo Safari, with one image in that category to be included in the final portfolio of ten images. Film photographers will be provided with 10 rolls of Kodak slide film. Only photos taken on this film will be accepted. No "extras" or private stock photography can be used or processed. All film must be processed at normal rating, no push or pull processing will be available.

Digital photographers are required to sign the Digital Photography Pledge, and expected to abide by those rules during the Photo Safari.

  • Download Digital Photography Pledge.

Film must be turned in to the Media Room by 10 p.m., Sunday, May 1, 2005. A professional photo lab in Anchorage will process film.

Images will be returned to photographers for editing by mid-afternoon Monday, May 2, 2005. A portfolio of 10 images must be turned into the meeting Media Room by 5 p.m., Monday, May 2, 2005, as follows:

    • 10 images must be placed in a plastic image sheet (film) or on a CD (digital) with only your Social Security number for identification on each image mount and on your image sheet, or on the CD.
    • Note "Assign" for your assignment photo.
    • In addition, one of the following five categories may be noted on each image: Scenic, People, Sports/Action, and Animals.
    • Digital shooters, along with marking your CD with Social Security number, please title each image with your Social Security number followed by a dash and numbers 1-10, and one of the above categories as appropriate.

    Judging and Awards
A panel of local photographers and editors will judge the images. Images will be displayed in print format at the Snow City Café during the First Friday Art Walk. Winner images will be unveiled at the Aurora Bora Bash banquet. Both events take place on Friday, May 9, 2005. Prizes will be awarded to the best two portfolios of 10 images, known as the Gold and Silver Portfolios. Prizes may also be awarded to the best image in each of the following five categories: Best of Show, Scenic, People, Sports/Action, and Animals.

    Snow City Café Photo Exhibit
A selection of images from each Photo Safari participant will be printed, matted, and displayed at the Snow City Café in Anchorage. Chapter meeting attendees will visit the exhibit on the opening day of the month-long show during the First Friday Art Walk.

    Use of Images
In return for their considerable assistance, the Anchorage Convention & Visitors Bureau (ACVB) may select one original image from each photographer and maintain non-exclusive rights (all uses except advertising). Photographers can market duplicates or similar shots as they please. ACVB will obtain and provide to each photographer one good-quality duplicate or digital equivalent of the chosen image.

ACVB will also have the opportunity to purchase licensing rights to additional pictures taken during the entire meeting period, at a negotiated price of $150. Each photographer can submit pictures to ACVB for consideration about a month after the meeting. Payment includes licensing of all usage rights, except for advertising use. The photographers may market duplicates or similar shots as the photographers please. For these images, however, each photographer will retain possession of the original images, with the ACVB being responsible for duplicating the images it selects.

At their expense, ACVB has rights to reproduce the complete Photo Safari image show as an audio-visual presentation for internal and promotional use only. Anchorage media may use shoot-out portfolio pictures for editorial publication when reporting on the SATW Western Chapter Meeting, with proper photo credit.
