8/12/04 - ACVB Wins Gold Service Award

News Release

Anchorage, Alaska – August 12, 2004

ACVB WINS 2004 GOLD SERVICE AWARD

Meetings & Conventions magazine subscribers selected the Anchorage Convention & Visitors Bureau (ACVB) as the recipient of the magazine’s prestigious 2004 Gold Service Award. This marks the 11th time ACVB has won the award in the past 12 years.

The Gold Service Award recognizes convention and visitors bureaus that have excelled in professionalism and dedication in their service to meeting professionals. The magazine’s readers make selections based on key criteria, including professionalism of staff, support on hotels and site inspections, assistance with ground transportation planning, guidance on local attractions, and liaison with local venders and services.

“Conventions are a tremendous catalyst to the Anchorage economy and in 2004 generated more than $77 million of business,” said Bruce Bustamante, ACVB president and CEO.

ACVB Conventions Meetings Sales & Service (CMSS) team is currently booking conventions as far in advance as 2010. The CMSS team has recently landed the 2005 America Rock Mechanics Association 40th U.S. Rock Mechanics Symposium, the 2007 National Congress of American Indians 2007 Mid-Year NCAI Conference and the 2005 Society for Invertebrate Pathology XXXVIIIth Annual Meeting of the Society for Invertebrate Pathology. These three conferences alone will have an economic impact of $2,632,671 to Anchorage.

In the second quarter of 2004 there were: 152 conventions booked, 189 conventions serviced, 64 requests for bid proposals, two bid presentations, three attendance promoters and four site inspections.

ACVB previously won the Gold Service Award in 1993 and annually from 1995 through 2004. The Anchorage Convention & Visitors Bureau’s mission is to attract and serve visitors to the Municipality of Anchorage. ACVB’s marketing functions are funded by half of the bed tax collected by the lodging association. The other half goes to the Municipality’s general fund. ACVB receives no state or federal funds.
