Anchorage, AK - (April 27, 2004)
Romig Student wins 13th Annual Wild About Anchorage Trivia Contest
Andrea Stern, a seventh grade student from Romig Middle School, Anchorage, received first place at the Anchorage Convention & Visitors Bureau (ACVB) Wild About Anchorage 2004 Trivia Contest, part of a school business partnership program. Forty-eight seventh grade students from eight Anchorage middle schools were quizzed about Anchorage geography, historical facts, weather, economic impact of tourism, conventions, and maps of Southcentral Alaska. The Trivia Contest was held at the William A. Egan Civic and Convention Center.
Up to eight students competed at a time using a fast-paced, electronic board-game format. Emcee Cary Carrigan asked questions, and answers were reviewed by a judging panel of four: Scott and Stu from KGOT 101.3, Ryan Jarvis, 2003 Trivia Contest winner and Jane Yokoyama.
Eighth grade students from Central Middle School of Science's School Business Partnership Class organized and ran the Trivia Contest, including material preparations, prize procurement, entertainment and publicity.
The event began in 1992 as a school business partnership between ACVB, the Best Western Barratt Inn and Central Middle School. The program incorporates four goals: 1) Educate students about the Anchorage area; 2) Introduce students to Alaska's second largest industry, tourism; 3) Instill a sense of pride in students about where they live; 4) Give students hands-on experience planning, coordinating and implementing a multi-tier event.
Stern won first place for answering the question, "Where can you visit spirit houses of Russian Orthodox and Athabascan beliefs?" She received a prize package consisting of a trophy from Bovey Trophy, a flightseeing tour from Alaska Flightseeing Tours, a trip for two from Denali Raft Adventures, a one-night stay at the Ramada Inn and an annual pass from H2Oasis. All contestants received a Wild About Anchorage Trivia Contest T-shirt.
The Anchorage Convention & Visitors Bureau's mission is to attract and serve visitors to the Municipality of Anchorage. ACVB's marketing functions are funded by half of the bed tax collected by the lodging association. The other half goes to the Municipality's general fund. ACVB receives no state or federal funds.
